the Outer Banks Sentinel Guestbook
Our family could never afford a vacation. Finally, when our kids were 8,6,2 we took our first one to Kill Devil Hills during the week of the "Perfect Storm." It was Halloween week. We visited the four lighthouses, and just toured as much as we could. It's been 16 years of annual trips, all of which have been to Hatteras Island after that first trip. By some miracle of fate and timing we managed to buy an oceanside house in Salvo that we treasure. Thanks to the Sentinel for keeping us up to date on goings on as we rent during high season, and of course don't get down as much as we'd like. That darn work thing! Love that island though. Sandy and Bill Lankford, Wed August 23
Our friends from Richmond (VA) introduced us to the Outer Banks and Sanderling (Duck) some sixteen years ago. We immediately fell in love with the ocean, beaches and quaint atmosphere and we bought a timeshare in Duck and have used it every season for the last nine years. We love Manteo and visit there each time we come to OBX. This year (2005) we have visited three times, first in Corolla, then Nags Head and this week in Duck at our timeshare. We are even looking at moving to Manteo year-'round if we can connect with the right property. Keep OBX a great place to visit and live. We'll keep coming as long as we are able. -Tom and Judy, Midlothian, VA, Thu October 27
I moved to Texas in December of 2004 due to an illness in my family. I love being able to get online and read about the current happenings on the Outer Banks. Your newspaper was my favorite when I was there and remains my source of information now that I am gone. Keep up the great work. -Glenda Jackson, Mon September 26
I have been coming to the Outer Banks to vacation for the past 10 years plus it is an awesome place to come and experience nature at its most beautiful and wild. It truly is a place to feel at one with the Creator of Our Universe! Keep out the huge cookie-cutter condo beach homes that take away from the natural beauty and closeknit community and its families that have lived there all of their lives. And to those that want to sell out, you're selling out Outer Banks heritage!! Keep it natural and beautiful the way God meant it to be. -Debbie Kane, Fri September 16
The vacationing population has caused the greediness of both the vacation homes and year around rentals. If Mindy thinks that the vacation rates for a family are too high then she should try living in Dare County. Get a taste of what it's really like to live there. And people wonder why Myrtle Beach is having a vacation and building boom. Duh! -Gayle, Mon July 18
I grew up at the beach and love being able to keep up with everything by reading the Sentinel online.... to the "mindy" that posted earlier, you are shaming and blaming the entire OBX for a problem that is yours alone. try staying in a hotel or looking for an ocean view instead. -Liz, Thu July 14
Have been vacationing for 10 years in the OBX and am finding that affordable ocean-front housing for a small family is slowly dwindling. Not everyone can afford to pay $5000 for a beach-front home and some of us do not want to vacation with our extended family every year - SHAME ON THE OBX for letting this happen!! -Mindy, Thu October 28
We visit OBX at least once a year. This year it will be two times. It is our second home. We receive the Sentinel by mail. It is the only paper we have delivered. Not even a local paper. Thanks for being our link to the islands when we are back in Ohio. -Dennis Coz, Wed October 27
JEERS to all the pedestrians and cyclists who interfere with our local emergency operation scenes. Please heed the caution of police, fire and EMS personnel before entering or passing through restricted areas - the life you protect may very well be your own. -Nancy, Wed September 01
SHAME ON Clarence Dean, and Linda McCown and Milton Leary for wanting to go the the demolition of another true Outer Banks home! There are far too many 'mini motels' and 'candy colored condos' on the banks now. I've been a visitor for 30+ years and have seen so many of my beloved landmark homes go down and replaced by horrible giant monstrosities!!!! You know how hard it is to find a oceanfront home to rent for a family of 4 or even 10 anymore???? Most of the places have sleeping for more people than I have family for friends to fill them up! It's crazy! I don't know very many people that need a home for 10 let alone 18 or 25 like the ones they are building now!!! I've been coming to the banks for a long time and I am totally disappointed when I go there and see the mini motels taking over. jill, Sat August 21
Thanks to all of the good people at the OBX for maintaining a great place to visit. For your friendliness and cooperation to all visitors. I've seen most of the USA and the Outer Banks is one of my favorite places. Thank You! -David Wright, Sat August 14
Christ's Message - Christ's central message of love, forgiveness and working on your own sins (rather than those of others) has nearly been obliterated by what claims to be his church. http://juandejesus.50megs.com/realrel.html Tue July 27
Many thanks to the Outer Banks Sentinel for your continued coverage of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse situation. The public needs to be kept well informed on this matter and your reporters such as Angela and Sandy do a fine job of reporting the facts.
It is my sincere hope that a peaceful solution can be worked out between the Outer Banks Conservationists and the Currituck County Government.
The OBC has worked long and hard to restore and preserve this historic lightstation and it must be kept open to the public for the good of everyone in the beautiful State of North Carolina and all lighthouse lovers in the United States and elsewhere!

Freedom is secured by a free press as much as any force of armies. Luther H. Daniels, Jr. Thu April 01
We are new to OBX but love it and were fortunate to buy a small condo on the beach in Duck. Checking your site each week is the best link to our place most of the year. The only thing better is buying your newspaper when we're in Duck. I'm counting the days, months and years till retirement in OBX!!!!!! Mitchell E. Silverman Tue March 16
I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and my family are frequent visitors to the Outer Banks so I read your paper every week online. Your series about Hyde County is both very gripping and very sad. This series shows why the art of muckraking must never be allowed to die! Greg Daubner Wed March 10
great web site to keep up on what happening. ronnie beacham Thu February 26
I'm a part-timer on the Outer banks but soon will be a full-timer. I enjoy having the opportunity to read the local news via the internet as it gives me the chance to stay i touch with the happenings of the beach. Keep up the good work! Martha Ezzo Fri January 30
I have been coming to the Outer Banks, with a few exceptions (although multiple trips some years just might make up for those missed years!), all of my 44 years! I am so thankful that my parents made the area our annual family vacation spot and even more thankful that my own children and husband have grown to love it as much as I do. My only regret - that my parents never took the step to buy real estate there! Of course, now things are way out of our reach! Always enjoy reading your paper while visiting. Glad to have it available online so that I can stay connected - THANKS! Looking forward to our next visit... Doris Werner Tue January 13
Every year while down at the OBX we always buy your paper. It might not the biggest but it is great. I pulled up your web site to review the awful pictures of Isbel after she did her damage. It was sad to see what she did, but your coverage was excellent. Keep up the good work! We'll pick you up in July when we return, might even go down in April for a long birthday weekend. Suzie Davis Sun January 04
Nice web site!!! Just visited the Outer Banks for the first time last week and picked up your paper. I enjoyed getting a peak into what is happening locally. Plan on hitting your web site regularly until I can get back to your lovely area and may soon be a Sentinel subscriber!!
Thanks!

I am a native to Hatteras Island. Kinnakeet to be exact. I
am wondering what the thinking is these days in the Outer Banks, and
with all who are fond of the Outer Banks, regarding the upcoming
national election.
As you may or may not know, the current administration has expressed
great interest in exploritory oil drilling in the US. This would
definitely place this exploration off of the coast of the Outer
Banks. And, they'll do it in the name of patriotism and National
Security. With such close ties to big business oil, I am worried
about our (Outer Banks) environment that our children will one day
enjoy (hopefully).
I would like to say, as a native whose ancestry runs deep, to
examine your conscience when you are thinking about your choice for
any elected official. All of you who post messages on this board
about how much you love and want to preserve its pristine
environment, please express this in the ballot booth next November.
Oh, also, run out and get a copy of Al Franken's latest book. Its a
riot (and quite truthfull I might add).
Mark Augustson, Tue November 25
Enjoy your newspaper. Keep up the good work. Allan Asbell Sat November 15
I have vacationed at the Outer Banks area for years. I first stayed at Edgar Hooper's cottages in Buxton over 30 years ago. We traveled there the first week of October after Isabel and spent the weekend. It was quite an experience to see the power of the ocean in person. Kim Gamertsfelder Thu October 23
YOU KNOW THEY SAY WEST VIRGINIA IS SUPPOSED TO BE "GOD'S COUNTRY" NO WAY - GOD TOUCHED THE "OUTER BANKS" WITH HIS OWN HAND FIRST. IT'S AWESOME WITH THE WILDLIFE YOU CAN SEE (I GOT THE PICTURES TO PROVE THAT) YOU DON'T SEE THE WILD LIFE ANYWHERE EVEN IN MAUI. YOUR PAPER IS WONDERFUL!!!!! PLEASE KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK. THANK YOU, BETH HAIRFIELD, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA SUN. OCT. 19TH, 2003
My family and I are so sad to see the devastation from Isabel, we think of the Outer Banks as a second home we love it there and hope to someday live on the beautiful banks. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone. See you all soon, Sandra Hawn Wed October 01
The residents of OBX are in my thoughts and prayers. OBX is my favorite place to be. If I could make a living there, I would live there year round. But since I cannot make a living, I will see you next year on annual vacation. Best wishes. Cheryl Romero Thu September 25
I am 45 years old and have been visiting the outerbanks since before I could walk. All of my childhood vacations were spent there. My daddy taught me to fish on the rock jetty's at oregon inlet when I was 5. My husband and I visit there at least 4 times a year and hope to retire there. We were last there in April during the nor-easter---we took my very ailing father and we cut his bait for him to fish on the Frisco Pier..Daddy was the happiest he had been in years..Dad died August 21. I ordered a brick in his memory in Kitty Hawk...We are due to arrive 9/27/03 for another week. I know things will be very different but outerbanks folks are a tough breed and you will survive, rebuild, and move on...My deepest sympathy to all who have lost their homes and their buisnesses....keep up the faith.....your beaches have always been my primary source to reflect and restore my sanity ... God bless you all Dianne Slayden Thu September 25
we are so sorry to see what everyone there is having to go through! each and every person is in our thoughts and prayers. i love the outer banks and think of it as my second home! it truely breaks my heart to see what it and everyone there has gone through. we love it not only for the beauty it holds, but also for the people that live there. everything about your home is welcoming. we wish you the best and we'll be thinking of you! Bethany Donelow Tue September 23
My heart breaks as I see the damage from Isabel... The OUTER BANKS is truly the first place the hands of GOD formed when he made the earth. The most beautiful spot in the Universe. I have had the priviledge to visit you 2 or 3 times a year for the past 14 years. I dream as many others do of someday being able to sit on the sand day after day and call it my own. May you all gain strength and comfort knowing that all of "us" non-residents are wishing you well and praying for the help you need to get your lives back to normal. Here in Maryland where Isabel roared up the Chesapeake Bay Region into my own back yard I can sympathize with you on the forces of the storm. Love and Blessings to all who read this, Sherry Miller Tue September 23
Hope all is well up there. We visit a few times a year and are planning a trip to Okracoke next month.I hopethings are good enough for us to make it. Elizabeth Dixon Mon September 22
My heart was saddened as I watched the coverage of Isabel's fury on the OBX. My husband and I have been vacationing in OBX for the past 10 years. Our last couple of visits we even discussed becomming residents. We still love the area and always will. Our prayers are with all of you. I know you will be triumphant once again and rebuild this wonderful haven of God's handy work. TAMMY TAYLOR Mon September 22
Our best wishes to the folks in Hattaras Village. Steve Redhead September 22
God Bless Hatteras Village and everyone working so hard to rebuild. I have been visiting there for twenty two years. It still is my fantasy Island, Keep everyone safe until my next visit. Our prayers are with you. joanne mierzejewski Sun September 21
My heart is heavy as I see the news photos of the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel. With each new image, I search for the places I love each summer, and I pray for all the wonderful Outer Banks people who make my family's vacation so special every year. Have faith and fortitude as you rebuild. Remember, you are lucky to live in the most beautiful place on the east coast. Dell Sat September 20
I am in Marysville Calif., 50 miles north of Sacramento. We are all praying for everyones safety during this storm. Good luck and try to keep your spirits up. Ken Henrich September 17

Wishing all the Locals in my second home,OBX, a safe Isabel. keep your heads down!!!! we will be back 2005. Curt Bellfy September 15
I receive your newspaper second hand via my daughter who owns a house in Nags Head. We live in Virginia but spend a lot of time at her house in Nags Head. The paper is our way of keeping up with current events, news, etc. when we are not able to be there. It is so much more enjoyable to read than the Washington Post. Keep up the good work. James E. Timm, Fri September 12
I am relocating to the OBX area and your newspaper has been a great resource for me in transacting business from where I am located. Robin Morgan, Thu September 04
I really appreciate your online version of the news from OBX! As a distant homeowner, it's good to be able to keep up with things as best I can, and the online Sentinel certainly helps! Please, don't worry...I buy a copy every time I am at the OBX! I used to get it in the mail, but it showed up a week later than the publish date, and as a rule, I was there in the meantime! Great work though....Thanks! Joe Murphy, Tue September 02
I have been visiting your wonderful area for many years and love your news. It makes days in W.V. brighter. I hope soon to make the area my home. Keep up the great work. Tim Shanks, Mon August 25
I have subscribed to the Sentinel for about 7 years but it takes time to receive it in AZ. Since I have vacation property in Duck and visit several times a year I was really pleased to find your website so complete. I still want my "hardcopy" but do really enjoy being able to check local news every day. Sarah L. Robinette, Sat August 23
It was nice to check out news from grants. took me back to other times. good site. rick rod, Wed August 20

Thanks for this handy service! I have a house in Corolla and although I live nearly 700 miles away it makes me feel connected to my home away from home. I really enjoy the articles and local news. I keep reading the classifieds and thinking...someday. If the right ad comes up then "someday" may happen sooner than later! Linda Wolverton, August 18
I have been in SC with my husband building a bridge since Nov.2002, I enjoy being able to see what is going on around my home while I am away.
